As an amateur radio operator for the Boston Marathon, what you can bring with you depends on where you are stationed. General guidance is below, but your segment coordinator or station captain will be able to give you guidance specific to your assignment.

Neither the Communications Committee, nor the B.A.A. implements security policies. Anything you attempt to bring into a secured area, despite descriptions below, is subject to the discretion of law enforcement officials.

Start

Pack light. We start very early, but we're also dismissed early. Everything you will need for the day can be found here.

Absolutely no backpacks are allowed (clear or otherwise). Be prepared for security screening. We recommend cargo pockets or a small belt pack or waist pack (no larger than 5 inches x 15 inches x 5 inches) to accommodate your gear and some snacks.

There is no space available for storing extra gear or clothes. Everything you need for the day must be carried with you.

Course

Bring what you need for the day, but pack light. You'll want to be sure to include your equipment and it's recommended that you pack a lunch. Rules vary by town and even by station. Your station captain will be able to provide specific guidance when you arrive.

Course Net Control

There are no restrictions, but bring only what you need for your assignment.

Finish

Finish has a long day so small clear bags are permitted with a nametag clearly displayed. Be prepared for security screening and pack light. Make sure you have all your equipment and also some snacks. Most finish positions move around quite a bit, so be sure your gear won't hinder your ability to move around.

Finish/Transportation Net Control

Finish/Transportation Net Control has a long day so small clear bags are permitted. Be prepared for security screening and pack light. Make sure you have all your equipment and also some snacks. Be sure to have a nametag/luggage tag on any bag you bring as it will be stowed under a desk.

Transportation

While a programmed mobile radio will be provided for all bus operators, bringing your own mobile or handheld, along with a mag-mount or suction cup antenna is advised. Backup batteries for phones and radios is also recommended.

There are no specific restrictions on personal items other than the existing B.A.A. restrictions.
